The New 19th

Welcome to the New 19th House District

Following action by the Virginia General Assembly, on November 3, 2020, Virginia residents voted to amend the state’s Constitution to authorize the establishment of the Virginia Redistricting Commission. [1]

The Commission was established for the sole purpose of developing maps for Virginia’s state legislative districts and districts for the U.S. House of Representatives.

In years past, redistricting was accomplished through the normal state legislative process—bills outlining the districts were introduced, considered, and passed by a majority of both the Virginia Senate and House of Delegates, and were signed by the Governor, with the legislature drawing the maps.

With the 2020 change to Virginia’s Constitution, the Commission was charged with drawing maps for the General Assembly to approve. 

Upon the failure of the Virginia Redistricting Commission to submit a redistricting plan by the governing statutory deadlines, the Supreme Court of Virginia assumed that responsibility. On December 28, 2021, the Court approved maps drawn by the Special Masters. [2]

The redistricting plan and maps include a single redistricting map for Virginia’s representatives to the United States House of Representatives, a single redistricting map for the Senate of Virginia, and a single redistricting map for the Virginia House of Delegates. The New 19th District for the Virginia House of Delegates was born from this effort.

The first Democratic Primary is anticipated to be held in June 2023. The General Election to elect the first Delegate for the New 19th District is anticipated to be held in November 2023.
